Kanchanaburi

River Kwai country

Two to three hours west of Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is river and forest country. Erawan National Park has one of Thailand’s prettiest waterfalls — seven tiers of turquoise pools you can swim in. Further up the valley are Sai Yok’s falls and caves, and the huge Srinakarin lake. Stay a night in a raft house on the River Kwai, and ride the slow train along the cliffs above the river. It is an easy weekend from Bangkok, by bus, minivan or train.
