Srinakarin Dam and Lake in Kanchanaburi

Part of the Kanchanaburi travel guide — see every topic in All Kanchanaburi Guides.

North of Kanchanaburi town, Srinakarin Dam holds back the Kwae Yai river and forms a large lake among forested hills. It is one of the quietest and most scenic places in the province. You can take a boat trip, sleep on a floating raft, and visit the Huay Mae Khamin waterfall in the national park around the lake. This guide covers the basics.

The dam and the lake

Srinakarin Dam is a large dam on the Kwae Yai river, about 65 to 70 km northwest of Kanchanaburi town. It is run by EGAT, the national power company, and makes electricity as well as storing water. The lake behind it is long and winding, with many arms and islands. Steep limestone hills and forest drop straight into the water. The area near the dam has viewpoints and gardens where you can stop for photos. The road from town passes close to Erawan National Park, so you can visit both in one day by car.

Boat trips and raft stays

Boats can be hired from piers around the lake for trips to quiet coves, islands and viewpoints. Many trips also stop for a swim. Floating raft resorts sit in sheltered bays on the lake. Rooms are on rafts tied together, often with decks, kayaks and a small restaurant. Some rafts can be reached only by boat. Mornings are calm and misty, and the sunsets over the hills are a highlight. Raft resorts here are less busy than those near town, especially on weekdays. Ask whether boat transfers and meals are included when you book.

Huay Mae Khamin waterfall

Huay Mae Khamin is a waterfall in the national park around the lake, Khuean Srinagarindra National Park. A creek runs down a series of tiers through the forest to the lake. It is less crowded than Erawan, and many visitors like it for that reason. A forest trail with steps follows the tiers, and you can stop at pools along the way. It is farther from town than Erawan, about another hour of driving. The road and the trail can be slippery in the rainy season. A national park entry fee applies, and there are campsites and park bungalows nearby.

Getting there

There is no regular public transport to the lake. The easiest way is to hire a car with a driver from Kanchanaburi town, or join a tour that combines the lake with Erawan Falls. You can also rent a scooter if you are an experienced rider, but the roads are hilly with long distances between fuel stops. Raft resorts often arrange pickups from town or from a pier. Plan a full day for the lake and a waterfall, or better, stay a night on a raft. The cool season from about November to February is the most comfortable time to visit.
