River Kwai Raft Stays in Kanchanaburi
Part of the Kanchanaburi travel guide — see every topic in All Kanchanaburi Guides.
A night on a floating raft is one of the most relaxing things to do in Kanchanaburi. The rooms sit on pontoons or bamboo rafts tied to the river bank, so you sleep right on the water. Some rafts are in town, a short walk from cafes and shops. Others are far upriver in the forest, reached by boat. This guide explains the options and how to choose.
Rafts in town
In Kanchanaburi town, raft guesthouses and small hotels line the river along Mae Nam Kwai Road and nearby lanes. Many have simple floating rooms with a fan or air conditioning, a small deck and a view of the water. Prices range from budget to mid-range. The main road nearby has cafes, restaurants, bike rentals and tour desks, so you can walk to dinner. The River Kwai Bridge is a short ride north along the river. Ask about noise before you book, because some stretches of river have floating karaoke or party boats at night, especially on weekends.
Jungle rafts upriver
Further upriver, on the Kwae Noi near Sai Yok, are raft resorts set in quiet forest. Some can be reached only by boat from a pier on the road. The setting is green and peaceful, with limestone hills, birds and very little traffic noise. Rooms range from simple bamboo huts to comfortable floating villas. A few places use little or no electricity and light the rooms with lamps at night. Most upriver resorts sell packages with meals, boat transfers and trips to waterfalls and caves. You will need a full day or more to enjoy them, so plan at least one night.
Life on the water
On a raft you can swim, float down the river in a life jacket, or paddle a kayak. Many places have hammocks and decks for reading and watching the river go by. Mornings are often misty, and sunsets over the water can be beautiful. The rafts move a little with the current, which some people find relaxing. Rooms are simple, so pack light. Mosquitoes can be busy at dusk, so use insect spray, and choose a room with a net or screens. Meals are usually served on the raft, with Thai dishes and some Western food.
Safety and choosing a raft
The river can be fast, especially in the rainy season from about June to October. Always wear a life jacket when you swim, and do not swim alone or at night. Children should be watched at all times on the decks. Check recent guest reviews for cleanliness, noise and how the staff handle safety. Ask whether the price includes boat transfers and meals. If you want quiet, choose an upriver raft or a town raft away from the busy party stretch. The cool season from about November to February is the most comfortable time for a raft stay.
