The public community hospital for Pranburi district, 25 kilometres south of Hua Hin: 60 beds on a large site in Wang Phong, with an accident-and-emergency building, an advanced-life-support ambulance team and general wards. It is the nearest hospital of any kind to the resorts at Pak Nam Pran, Khao Kalok and Sam Roi Yot, and it refers serious cases up the road to Hua Hin.
What it is known for
Being the hospital for the quiet end of the coast. Pranburi Hospital opened on 1 December 1986 with ten beds, grew to 30 in 1995 and to 60 in 2003, when a local donor paid for two new two-storey blocks — an accident-and-emergency building and a women’s ward. It is a level-F2 community hospital of the Ministry of Public Health: general practice and outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, an emergency unit with its own advanced-life-support rescue team, and the primary-care work of the district. It is not a specialist hospital; a serious case is stabilised here and sent 25 kilometres up Phetkasem Road to Hua Hin Hospital, or to Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin for the insured.
Who it suits
Anyone staying at Pak Nam Pran, Khao Kalok, Dolphin Bay or Sam Roi Yot who needs a doctor without an hour’s round trip to Hua Hin, travellers without insurance, and anyone hurt on the roads south of Hua Hin for whom it is the nearest emergency unit. For a minor complaint in Pak Nam Pran itself, Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin also runs a weekday clinic there (+66 32 616 890, 9:00–19:00). Service is in Thai and English is limited; for anything serious, or if you have insurance and time, go straight to Hua Hin.
Cost and insurance
Public prices, among the lowest you will meet: a consultation, tests and medicine typically costs a few hundred baht, and even an admission is affordable. Pay at the cashier in cash or by card; there is no direct billing to speak of, and insurers treat it as pay-and-claim. Ask for an itemised receipt and, if you need one for a claim, a medical certificate in English — it can be done, but the default paperwork is Thai. Bring your passport, and the rental papers if a hired scooter or car was involved.
Getting there
In Pranburi town, about three kilometres east of the Phetkasem highway on the way towards the coast, and six or seven kilometres — ten to fifteen minutes — inland from the Pak Nam Pran beachfront; from Hua Hin it is 25 kilometres and about half an hour. Minivans and songthaews between Hua Hin and Pranburi run along Phetkasem to the Pranburi junction; from the beach resorts a taxi or a hotel car is the realistic option, and a Bolt is worth trying but not guaranteed this far out.
