The public community hospital for Cha-am district, 25 kilometres north of Hua Hin: 60 beds, an outpatient building opened in 2016, an inpatient block from 2017 and a small emergency unit, on Khlong Thian Road with the town’s protected forest between it and the sea. It handles the everyday illnesses and injuries of the Cha-am beach strip and sends anything serious on to a bigger hospital.
What it is known for
Being the nearest hospital to the Cha-am beachfront. Cha-am Hospital opened on 25 April 1986 as a ten-bed district hospital and has grown by donation ever since: a 30-bed ward in 1989, 60 beds from 2004, a four-storey outpatient building opened in 2016 and a three-storey inpatient block in 2017. It is a Ministry of Public Health community hospital — outpatient clinics, an emergency unit and inpatient wards rather than specialist centres — and it is accredited under Thailand’s HA hospital-quality scheme, with its current certificate running to 2028. For a visitor it is the place to be stabilised, stitched, rehydrated or X-rayed; anything complex is referred on to a larger hospital.
Who it suits
Anyone staying in Cha-am who falls ill or is hurt and cannot face the 25-kilometre run to Hua Hin, travellers without insurance, and the retirees who live along this stretch of coast and use it for routine care. Service is in Thai and the outpatient hall is busiest in the mornings; the emergency unit is quicker. It is not the hospital for a serious injury, a heart problem or a difficult pregnancy: in those cases go directly to Hua Hin Hospital or Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, half an hour south, or call 1669 and let the crew choose.
Cost and insurance
Public prices, and low even by Thai standards — a consultation, basic tests and medicine for a foreigner typically costs less than a night in a cheap hotel. Pay at the cashier before you leave; direct billing is not something to expect, and the paperwork comes in Thai unless you ask for an English medical certificate and an itemised receipt, which you should if you intend to claim. Bring your passport, and after a road accident the rental papers — the compulsory motor insurance on a hired scooter or car covers some injury costs for a licensed driver.
Getting there
On Khlong Thian Road in Cha-am town, between the Phetkasem highway and the beach, with the Cha-am non-hunting area — a patch of protected forest — behind it on the seaward side. From the beach road it is a few minutes by motorbike taxi or songthaew; from Hua Hin it is 25 kilometres and about half an hour up Phetkasem Road, and any driver will know ‘rong phayaban Cha-am’.
