The public general hospital for Hua Hin and the tourist coast around it: 400 beds, every major department and an emergency room that takes the serious road-accident cases the private hospitals send on, at Thai public-hospital prices — a fraction of a private bill for a foreigner paying cash. The trade-off is queues, crowded wards and paperwork mostly in Thai.
What it is known for
Size and reach. Hua Hin Hospital is a Ministry of Public Health general hospital of about 400 beds, classed at level S — the tier just below a regional hospital — and it is where the serious road accidents, complicated births, long admissions and public-health work of this coast end up. It has been on its Phetkasem Road site since the 1970s and was formally opened in 1979; a 200-bed extension was completed in 2009. Surgery, orthopaedics, cardiology, neurology, paediatrics and obstetrics are all here, and the emergency room takes cases around the clock. It also runs four satellite clinics around the district, but for a visitor the main hospital is the one that matters.
Who it suits
Travellers without insurance who need real care at a price they can pay, long-stay residents who hold Thai social security, and anyone in an emergency for whom it is simply the nearest big hospital — it is also where the district hospitals in Cha-am and Pranburi send the cases they cannot handle. It is not the place for a quick English-language consultation: the outpatient queues are long, the wards are busy, forms are in Thai and English is patchy outside the emergency room. Bring a Thai-speaking friend if you can, and your passport in any case.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices. Foreigners are charged more than Thai citizens but still a fraction of what either private hospital in town bills for the same treatment; an outpatient visit with basic tests and medicine typically comes to a few hundred to a couple of thousand baht, and an admission is affordable. Payment is in cash or by card at the cashier before you leave; insurers almost never direct-bill a public hospital, so expect to pay and claim. Ask for an itemised receipt and a medical certificate in English before you go — both are routine requests, but you do have to ask.
Getting there
At the northern end of town on the inland side of Phetkasem Road, between Hua Hin Soi 10 and Soi 12 — about four kilometres north of the clock tower, ten minutes by car, and on the way in from the airport and from Cha-am. Songthaews and minivans running north along Phetkasem pass the entrance; a Bolt or a taxi is easier with luggage or an injury. Say ‘rong phayaban Hua Hin’ and every driver knows it. In an emergency call 1669; for anything less urgent the switchboard is +66 32 523 000, though expect to be answered in Thai.
Details checked against the hospital’s own website, September 2026. Call before a non-urgent visit; in an emergency call 1669 or the hospital’s own emergency line above. Travel information, not medical advice.
