The University of Cebu Medical Center, always called UCMed, opened on 1 May 2015 on Ouano Avenue in Mandaue and is the newest of the metro’s large private hospitals. It is affiliated with the University of Cebu and its medical school, licensed by the Department of Health as a Level 2 general hospital with 200 authorised beds, and it runs an emergency room its own site describes as always open, with a trauma room, a heart centre and a dialysis unit.
What it is known for
Being new, and being purpose-built. UCMed opened in 2015 with the equipment budget of a hospital designed this decade: a heart centre with cardiac rehabilitation, an eye centre, dialysis, oncology, a wound care centre and a rehabilitation and sports medicine unit. Its emergency room, which the hospital says is always open, has its own minor operating theatre and trauma room. It is certified to ISO 9001:2015 by TÜV Rheinland and is an American Heart Association training centre for resuscitation courses. It also runs a two-person hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which it describes for wound healing and recovery rather than for diving injuries.
Who it suits
Visitors staying on Mactan, near the airport or anywhere on the Mandaue side, who want a modern private hospital without crossing the city. It suits an ordinary travel emergency well — a fall, a scooter graze, a chest infection, a stomach bug that will not stop — and the emergency room is open around the clock with a trauma room behind it. For the rarest specialties and the largest intensive-care capacity, Chong Hua’s Cebu City campus and the government regional hospital are still the deeper institutions on the island.
Cost and insurance
Private Philippine prices, in the same band as the other private hospitals here and a fraction of a Western bill. Expect the standard local rule: a deposit or a guarantee of payment before admission and the account settled before you are discharged. The hospital publishes a page for accredited health plans but names no international insurers on it, so assume pay-and-claim unless your assistance company tells you otherwise — ring the number on your policy before you go in, and ask the admitting desk what it will accept. Keep the itemised statement and ask for a medical certificate in English.
Getting there
Ouano Avenue in Barangay Guizo, on the Mandaue reclamation, roughly fifteen to twenty minutes from Mactan-Cebu International Airport when the bridges are clear and a good deal longer when they are not. From uptown Cebu City it is twenty to forty minutes. Grab is the easy option.
