Chong Hua is the hospital Cebuanos name first, and the one smaller hospitals around the region send their difficult cases to. It is a non-profit, founded as a clinic in 1909 and now about 660 beds on a tight uptown campus at Capitol Site, with the widest specialist cover on the island. A second campus opened in Mandaue in 2016, and the group runs an international patient desk for visitors.
What it is known for
Depth of specialists, and the habit of being the hospital other hospitals refer to. Chong Hua began as a clinic in 1909 and is run as a non-profit by the Asociación Benévola de Cebu; the Cebu City campus at Capitol Site holds about 660 beds and centres for heart, cancer, kidney, neurology and children’s medicine, and the group says its two campuses have more than a thousand beds between them. Its own site publishes an ISO 9001:2015 certification. It also held Joint Commission International accreditation from 2009, the first hospital outside Luzon to do so, but that lapsed in 2015 — older directories still repeating it are out of date.
Who it suits
Anyone with something serious, anyone with insurance, and anyone who wants the largest pool of specialists on the island. It is the obvious choice for visitors staying uptown around Fuente Osmeña, Capitol and Osmeña Boulevard, and it is where cases from Bohol, northern Cebu and the dive towns are routinely transferred. The campus is old, central and busy, so corridors and parking are tight. If you are staying on Mactan or in a resort near the airport, the group’s Mandaue campus is the same medicine with a much shorter drive at the wrong time of day.
Cost and insurance
Private Philippine pricing: far below the Western equivalent, well above a public hospital here. Expect to be asked for a partial payment when you are admitted and to settle the bill at the billing section before you are discharged — the hospital sets that out in its own patients’ guide, and it applies to foreign patients as a matter of course. It publishes a list of accredited insurers that includes International SOS and Allianz Worldwide, so a guarantee of payment is possible if your policy runs through one of them; everybody else pays and claims. Ask for an itemised bill and an English medical certificate before you leave.
Getting there
Don Mariano Cui Street at the corner of J. Llorente Street in Barangay Capitol Site, about five minutes uptown from Fuente Osmeña circle and ten to fifteen from Ayala Center Cebu outside the rush. Grab covers the whole city and is the simplest way to arrive; jeepneys along Osmeña Boulevard pass the top of the street. From Mactan and the airport allow forty-five minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the bridges, which jam badly in the evening.
