Paoay Sand Dunes in Ilocos Norte
Part of the Ilocos Norte travel guide — see every topic in All Ilocos Norte Guides.
Near the towns of Paoay and Laoag, the coast of Ilocos Norte has wide sand dunes. They are one of the few large dune areas in the Philippines. Visitors come for fast 4x4 rides up and down the dunes, and to try sandboarding on the slopes. It is a fun, active trip for groups and families. This guide explains how the tours work and how to prepare.
4x4 rides
The most popular activity is a ride in an open 4x4 vehicle. Drivers speed across the sand, climb steep dunes and drop down the other side, much like a roller coaster. Rides usually last around 30 minutes to one hour, and include stops for photos and sandboarding. Several operators run tours. Prices are usually per vehicle, so it is cheaper per person in a group. Hold on tight, and tell the driver if you want a gentler ride. Keep your bag on your lap and wear sunglasses against the sand.
Sandboarding
Sandboarding is like snowboarding, but on sand. Most visitors sit or lie on the board and slide down the slope, which is easier than standing. Boards are usually included in the 4x4 tour or can be rented. The sand is soft, so falls do not usually hurt, but walking back up the dune is tiring. Start on a smaller slope first. Children can try with an adult. Sand can get into your eyes, so wear sunglasses. Keep your arms and legs close to the board. Follow the guide's instructions. Many visitors say this is the most fun part of the trip.
Getting there
The main dune areas are a short drive from Laoag. Paoay town is nearby, so many visitors combine the two. Tour operators can pick you up from your hotel in Laoag. If you have your own car, drive to an operator's base at the dunes and book there. Weekends and holidays are busy, so go early or book ahead. Some tours offer sunset trips, which are cooler and give beautiful light. The trip from Laoag is quick, so you can visit in half a day.
What to wear and bring
Wear light clothes and closed shoes or sandals with straps. Sand gets everywhere, so do not wear your best clothes. Sunglasses protect your eyes from flying sand. Bring a hat, sun cream and water, as there is no shade on the dunes. Keep your phone in a pocket or a bag that closes. The sand can be very hot at midday, so go in the morning or late afternoon. Bring a small towel and a change of clothes for the drive back. A bottle of water helps wash sand off your hands. Keep your camera in a bag when you are not using it, because sand can damage it.
