Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in Ilocos Norte
Part of the Ilocos Norte travel guide — see every topic in All Ilocos Norte Guides.
Kapurpurawan is a white rock formation on the coast of Burgos, in Ilocos Norte. The name comes from the local word for white. Over a very long time, wind and waves shaped the soft limestone into smooth curves and layers. Against the blue sea, the white rock is a beautiful sight. This guide explains how to get there and how to visit safely.
The rock formation
The main formation is a large mass of white and cream limestone on the edge of the sea. Its surface has curves, ridges and layers created by erosion. The colour changes with the light, from bright white at midday to warm gold in the late afternoon. Visitors can view the rocks from a path and a viewing area. Climbing on the formation may be restricted to protect it, so follow the signs and the rules. Some parts are fenced, so stay outside the barriers. Early morning and late afternoon are best for photos.
Getting there
Kapurpurawan is in Burgos, north of Laoag. From Laoag, the drive takes about one hour or a little more. From the parking area, a path leads down to the rocks, and the walk takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Horse rides may be offered along part of the path for a fee. Most visitors come by hired van or car, often on a day tour that includes the Bangui windmills and Cape Bojeador Lighthouse. Roads are paved and generally in good condition. Day tours from Laoag often stop here in the afternoon.
Visiting tips
There is little shade along the path or at the rocks, so bring a hat, sun cream and water. Late afternoon is cooler and gives the best light for photos. The rocks can be slippery when wet, so wear shoes with good grip. Do not write on or carve into the rocks. Keep away from the edge when waves are high. Take all your rubbish with you. Stalls near the parking area may sell drinks and snacks. Allow about one hour for the visit, including the walk.
Cape Bojeador Lighthouse
Cape Bojeador Lighthouse stands on a hill in Burgos, not far from Kapurpurawan. It was first lit in 1892 and still guides ships along the coast. The lighthouse is made of brick, and from the hill you have wide views over the sea. A steep road and steps lead to the top. It is often visited on the same trip as Kapurpurawan and the windmills. The road up is steep, so take it slowly. Wear comfortable shoes. There may be a small fee. On a clear day, it is a good place for sunset. Check opening times locally.
