Pagudpud Beaches in Ilocos Norte
Part of the Ilocos Norte travel guide — see every topic in All Ilocos Norte Guides.
Pagudpud is a beach town at the northern tip of Luzon, in Ilocos Norte. It has long white-sand beaches, clear blue water and green hills behind the coast. It is quieter and less developed than many famous Philippine beach towns. Visitors come to relax, swim and explore waterfalls and viewpoints. This guide covers the main beaches, how to get there and when to go.
Saud Beach
Saud Beach is the best-known beach in Pagudpud. It has fine white sand, palm trees and calm water in the dry season. Several resorts and restaurants line the beach. It is good for swimming, walking and watching the sunset. On weekends and holidays, it can be busy with local visitors. On weekdays, it is often calm and quiet. Check the water conditions before swimming, as waves can be strong at times. Shady spots under the palm trees are good for a rest.
Blue Lagoon
Blue Lagoon, also known as Maira-ira Beach, is a long curve of white sand with bright blue water. It is a short drive from the centre of Pagudpud. The beach has resorts, food stalls and water sports at times. The area is also popular for surfing in certain seasons, when waves are bigger. Swim only in safe areas, and follow any warning signs or flags. There may be lifeguards at some times, but not always. Bring shade, water and snacks, as there are fewer shops at quieter parts of the beach.
Waterfalls and viewpoints
Inland from the beaches, Kabigan Falls is reached by a walk of around 20 to 30 minutes through fields and forest. The falls drop into a pool where you can cool off. Along the coast, the Patapat Viaduct is a long, raised road that curves along the cliffs above the sea. It is one of the most scenic drives in the region. There are viewpoints and small rest stops along the way. A small fee is often collected at Kabigan Falls. Wear shoes with grip for the walk. Drivers can stop at the viewpoints on the way.
Getting there
Pagudpud is about two hours or more by car from Laoag, depending on stops. Buses and vans run from Laoag to Pagudpud, but a hired car or van is easier if you want to stop at the windmills and other sights on the way. Laoag has an airport with flights from Manila. Buses also run from Manila to Laoag and some continue to Pagudpud, but the trip is long. The road along the coast is scenic. Leave Laoag early to make the most of the day. Ask your resort if it can arrange transport.
When to go
The best time is the dry season, from about November to April, when the sea is calmer and skies are clearer. March to May is the hottest time and a busy holiday period for local visitors. The rainy season, from about June to October, brings storms, and the sea can be rough. Resorts in Pagudpud range from simple rooms to comfortable hotels. Book ahead for holidays and long weekends. Weekdays are calmer and better value. Prices at resorts can rise in the busy months.
