Bangui Windmills in Ilocos Norte
Part of the Ilocos Norte travel guide — see every topic in All Ilocos Norte Guides.
The Bangui windmills are a line of large wind turbines standing along the shore of Bangui Bay, in the north of Ilocos Norte. They produce clean electricity from the strong sea winds. The first turbines started in 2005, and more were added in 2008. Today it is one of the most photographed places in the province. This guide covers how to visit.
The wind farm
The Bangui wind farm has 20 turbines standing in a row along the beach. Each turbine is very tall, with three long blades that turn slowly in the wind. The line of white towers against the sea and sky makes a striking view. Because the turbines stand on the beach, you can walk close to them on the sand. Do not climb on the towers or enter fenced areas. Stalls near the viewing area sell snacks and souvenirs. The turbines make a soft whooshing sound in the wind. Early morning is quieter, with fewer visitors.
Getting there
Bangui is on the north coast of Ilocos Norte, between Laoag and Pagudpud. From Laoag, it takes about one and a half hours by car, depending on stops. Most visitors see the windmills on a day tour from Laoag, or on the way to or from Pagudpud. Buses heading north from Laoag pass through Bangui, but a hired van or car is easier for sightseeing. A road leads down to the beach near the turbines. Some drivers include several stops in one price, so ask before you book. Roads in the area are generally good.
When to go
The dry season, from about November to April, is the best time for clear skies. Late afternoon gives soft light and good photos, and sunsets can be beautiful. Midday is very hot, with little shade on the beach. The wind can be strong, so hold on to hats and loose items. During the rainy season and typhoons, the beach can be dangerous, and travel along the coast may be difficult. Bring water, as shops near the beach may be few. Go on a weekday for fewer visitors.
Nearby stops
The windmills are often combined with other sights in the north. The Kapurpurawan rock formation and Cape Bojeador Lighthouse are in Burgos, to the south. Pagudpud, with its beaches, is to the north and east. Along the coast road there are viewpoints and small towns to stop for food. With a car and driver, you can see the windmills, Kapurpurawan and the lighthouse in one day from Laoag. Start early to have time for everything. Bring snacks for the road. Plan your lunch stop with your driver.
