Nightlife and Beach Bars in Perhentian Islands

Perhentian nightlife means Long Beach on Kecil and essentially nothing else. In season, a handful of bars on the sand run music, fire shows, buckets and a young crowd until one or two in the morning, and it is genuinely fun in a low-key beach-hut way. Everywhere else on both islands is quiet by ten. The complicating factor is that Terengganu, the state the islands belong to, is one of Malaysia's most conservative, and alcohol availability reflects that.
Long Beach
The strip of bars along the sand is the whole scene: reggae on speakers, buckets and cheap spirits, fire dancers after dark, and a rotating crowd of divers, backpackers and dive-school staff. It runs from around nine until one or two, later at weekends and in peak season. It is small, informal and easy to fall into conversation in. Nothing is smart and nothing needs booking. In March and October many of the bars are closed along with everything else.
Everywhere else
Coral Bay has a couple of quiet places for a sunset drink and is otherwise silent by ten. Perhentian Besar is early to bed by design: resort restaurants, a drink on a terrace, and divers going to sleep before a morning boat. The outlying beaches on Kecil have whatever their single restaurant offers. If nightlife matters, stay on Long Beach; if it does not, staying anywhere else and taking a water taxi across occasionally is the better arrangement — though the fare doubles after dark.
Alcohol and the state
Terengganu is a conservative Muslim state and alcohol is not sold in most Malay establishments or in the Perhentian village on Kecil, which is a working fishing settlement. The tourist accommodation and bars generally do serve it, but availability is not universal, prices are high because everything is shipped in, and it is worth checking before assuming. Drinking outside the tourist beaches is inappropriate. During Ramadan the situation tightens further and some businesses adjust hours.
Practicalities
Beers run 15–25 ringgit and buckets rather more. Bring cash, as everywhere on the islands. Water taxis after dark cost roughly double, so factor that in if you are staying on Besar. Do not swim at night after drinking — the combination of dark water, coral and alcohol produces the injuries the clinic sees most. And be aware that the beach parties are on the sand of a marine park: taking bottles and glass onto the beach and leaving anything behind is not acceptable.
