The Monsoon Season in Perhentian Islands

This is the single most important thing to know about the Perhentians and it catches people out every year. The north-east monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas to Malaysia's east coast from roughly November to February, and the Perhentians close: boat operators suspend the crossing, the great majority of accommodation and every dive shop shut and their staff go home, and the islands are left to a handful of caretakers. Exact dates shift each year with the weather and are announced locally rather than centrally.
What closes and when
The season generally winds down from late October, with most businesses closed by early or mid-November, and reopens through late February or March. Some years it is longer at either end. During the closure the boats from Kuala Besut do not run on any reliable schedule, which is the operative constraint — even if somewhere is open, getting there and back is not dependable. Dive schools close entirely, since visibility collapses and the sea is unworkable. A handful of places on Besar sometimes stay open for the odd visitor.
The shoulder
March and October are the shoulders and they are a genuine gamble. In early March, businesses reopen progressively over a few weeks, so a mid-March arrival may find half the island shut. In late October the reverse happens and the sea can turn early. The upside is very low prices and near-empty beaches; the downside is that a bad week means rough crossings, cancelled snorkel trips and closed restaurants. Check directly with your accommodation rather than trusting a published season.
The good season
March to October is the operating season, with the most reliable weather from April to September and the calmest, clearest water typically in the middle of it. July and August bring school holidays from Malaysia and Singapore and the islands fill; June and September are the best combination of conditions and space. Water temperature stays around twenty-eight to thirty degrees throughout. Visibility is generally best in the drier middle months and drops after heavy rain.
Planning around it
Do not book flights to Kota Bharu in December on the assumption that something will be open. If your dates fall in the monsoon, the west coast — Langkawi and Penang — is the alternative, since it is sheltered from the north-east monsoon and runs all year. Tioman, further south on the same coast, has a shorter and less absolute closure. And if you are travelling in the shoulder, book accommodation that confirms in writing that it is open and that boats are running.
