The Perhentians have the most clear-cut season of any destination in Malaysia. From roughly November to February the north-east monsoon brings rough seas and heavy rain to the east coast, the boats stop, and almost every business on the islands closes and its staff leave. From March to October the islands operate, with the best conditions from April to September. There is no ambiguity and no workaround; if your dates are in the monsoon, go to the west coast instead.
The operating season
March to October. Water temperature stays around twenty-eight to thirty degrees throughout and the weather is generally hot and sunny with occasional short storms. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is typically best in the drier middle months and drops for a few days after heavy rain. April, May, June and September offer the best combination of settled conditions, open businesses and space on the beach. July and August are the peak, when Malaysian and Singaporean school holidays overlap and the islands fill.
The shoulders
March and October are genuine gambles. Businesses reopen progressively through March, so an early-March arrival may find half the accommodation and most dive shops still shut. In October the sea can turn early and operators start winding down. In both months the prices are the lowest of the year and the beaches are close to empty, which for some people is exactly the trade they want. Check directly with your accommodation and with a boat operator before committing.
Crowds
The Perhentians are a domestic and regional destination as much as an international one, so the crowd calendar follows Malaysian and Singaporean holidays rather than European ones. July and August fill the islands, as do public holiday long weekends, Chinese New Year in the closed season and the school breaks. Long Beach on Kecil in August is a different island from Long Beach in May. Besar absorbs crowds better because the accommodation is spread across several beaches.
Choosing
For the best all-round trip: May, June or September. For guaranteed everything-open and settled weather at any cost in crowds: July or August. For the lowest prices and empty beaches, accepting real risk: mid-March or early October. Avoid: November to February entirely — and if those are your dates, Langkawi, Penang and the west coast are open all year and are the correct answer rather than a consolation.
