Where to Stay in Perhentian Islands

Accommodation on the Perhentians runs from basic timber huts with a fan and a shared bathroom to comfortable beachfront resorts, and the choice is mostly determined by which island and which beach you pick. Kecil's Long Beach is the budget and social end; Coral Bay is quieter; Besar has the mid-range and upper resorts spread along several beaches. The market has changed — the islands were once a turn-up-and-find-a-hut destination and are now busy enough in season that booking ahead matters.
Perhentian Kecil
Long Beach has the densest concentration: fan huts from 60–120 ringgit, air-conditioned chalets 150–350, and a handful of better places above that, all a few steps from the sand and the bars. It is noisy at night in season. Coral Bay, over the hill, is calmer and slightly more expensive for equivalent rooms, with the sunset and better beach snorkelling. The outlying beaches — D'Lagoon, Petani, Adam and Eve — have a few isolated places where you eat where you sleep and take a water taxi for anything else.
Perhentian Besar
Resorts and chalets spread along the west-facing beaches and at Teluk Dalam, at 150–500 ringgit for most and up to 900 for the better properties. Rooms are generally more comfortable than Kecil's, the beaches are quieter, and the evenings are early. This is the family and diver choice. The trade-off is that there is essentially nothing to do after dinner and a water taxi is required to reach Kecil's nightlife, which after dark costs double.
What to check
Ask specifically about three things. Electricity: some places run generators only for part of the day, which decides whether a fan or air conditioning works overnight. Water: much of it is brackish or desalinated and showers can be salty. And hot water, which is not universal. Also ask whether the property is open, particularly in March and October, and whether meals are included — on the outlying beaches you will eat every meal where you sleep because there is nowhere else.
Booking
Book ahead for July, August, Malaysian and Singaporean school holidays and any public holiday weekend, when the islands genuinely fill and the good places sell out. Outside those, a few days ahead is usually enough. Many places take bookings by WhatsApp rather than through booking sites and may want a deposit by bank transfer. Confirm your boat return date at the same time. And be aware that a stated star rating on these islands means very little; read recent reviews for power, water and cleanliness.
