Perfect 4 Day Itinerary in Perhentian Islands

The Perhentians are not a sightseeing destination and an itinerary here is mostly a matter of choosing which beach to be on. Four days is about right: enough for a full snorkel trip, a couple of dives or a start on a certification course, a walk across the island, and several days of the thing people actually come for. The travel days at each end are substantial, so four nights on the islands realistically means six days away.
Day 1: arrive
Fly into Kota Bharu, taxi forty-five minutes to Kuala Besut, pay the marine park fee and take the speedboat across — thirty to forty-five minutes to whichever beach you have booked. Arrive, swim, work out where things are and eat. If you are staying on Kecil's Long Beach, the evening is a beach bar; on Coral Bay or Besar, it is dinner and an early night. Confirm your return boat date with the operator on arrival, not on the day.
Day 2: the water
The full-day snorkel boat trip, which covers four or five sites in a half or full day for 40–80 ringgit: a turtle point, a shark point where blacktips patrol the shallows, the fish-feeding spot (decline the feeding), and a beach stop. It is the single best-value thing on the islands and the sightings are reliable. Afternoon on the beach. If you dive, this is the day for a two-tank trip to the Sugar Wreck and a pinnacle instead.
Day 3: the other island
Walk the jungle path from Long Beach to Coral Bay, or take a water taxi to the other island and spend the day on a beach you are not staying on — Besar's western beaches if you are on Kecil, or Long Beach if you are on Besar. Snorkel from the sand; the reef off Coral Bay and off Besar's west coast is good and free. Kayak or paddleboard if you want. Sunset from Coral Bay, which is the west-facing one.
Day 4 and leaving
One more morning in the water, then the boat back. Speedboats to Kuala Besut run through the day and stop by mid or late afternoon, so a same-day flight from Kota Bharu needs to be in the evening. With more time: a three-or-four-day open-water course, which is among the cheapest in the world and turns four nights into six or seven; or simply more days on the sand, which is what most people wish they had booked.
