Jakarta is the destination most Indonesia itineraries treat as an airport. That is a mistake and an understandable one: the metropolitan area holds over thirty million people, the traffic is genuinely legendary, and there is no single sight that announces itself the way Borobudur or Bali do. What there is instead is depth — the National Museum's archipelago collections, the Dutch colonial core at Kota Tua, a Chinatown older than the republic, the Betawi food culture that exists nowhere else, a mall and nightlife scene at Singapore scale for a third of the price, and, since 2019, an MRT that makes a chunk of the city genuinely navigable. Give it two days and it repays them.
