Budget in Jakarta

Part of the Jakarta travel guide — see every topic in All Jakarta Guides.

Jakarta is inexpensive in the ways that matter daily and only expensive in the ways you can avoid. Street food is 15,000–40,000 rupiah, the MRT and buses cost a few thousand, and a cross-town Grab is under 100,000. What costs money is alcohol, which carries heavy Indonesian excise, and the polished end of the restaurant and nightlife scene, which is priced against Singapore. A backpacker manages on 250,000–400,000 rupiah a day; a comfortable trip runs 900,000–2 million.

Accommodation and food

A hostel bed is 80,000–180,000 rupiah, a budget hotel room 250,000–500,000, a good four-star 600,000–1,200,000, and an international five-star 1–2.5 million. Rates are lowest at weekends, because Jakarta hotels serve business travel. Food: a street plate is 15,000–40,000, a warung or Padang meal 25,000–60,000, a mall food hall 50,000–100,000, and a good restaurant main 120,000–300,000. Eating exclusively at street stalls and warungs costs 80,000–150,000 a day.

Transport

MRT a few thousand rupiah a journey; TransJakarta a flat 3,500; KRL similar. A Grab car across town is 40,000–120,000, and a Gojek motorbike a third of that. The airport train is around 70,000 against 150,000–350,000 for a car. Trains to Bogor are a few thousand, and to Bandung 100,000–250,000. Transport is close to a rounding error in a Jakarta budget provided you use the rail and bus network rather than sitting in a car.

Attractions and drinks

Museums are 5,000–25,000 rupiah and several are free. Monas, Taman Mini and Ragunan are all inexpensive. Car-Free Day is free. The genuinely expensive items are drinks: a beer is 45,000–90,000 in a bar, a cocktail 130,000–250,000, and SCBD club prices run to Singapore levels. Imported wine and spirits carry severe excise. A night out in Kemang costs a third of the same night in SCBD.

Realistic totals

Backpacker, hostel and street food, using the MRT and buses: 250,000–400,000 rupiah a day. Mid-range, a good hotel, restaurant meals and Grab: 900,000–2 million. Comfortable with a five-star and a night out in SCBD: 3 million and up. Note the 2024 tourist levy applies on arrival in Bali, not Jakarta, so a Java-only trip avoids it. And note that Jakarta's malls, museums and Car-Free Day mean a genuinely good day here can cost almost nothing.
