Jakarta's day trips are shaped by one fact: getting out of the city is the hard part. Traffic on the southern corridors is severe at weekends, when the whole of Jakarta drives to Bogor and Puncak. That said, within two hours there are coral islands with white sand, a two-hundred-year-old botanic garden, tea plantations at altitude, and one of the great volcanic craters in Java. The rule is to leave very early or to go by boat, which sidesteps the road entirely.
The Thousand Islands
Kepulauan Seribu is an archipelago of over a hundred small coral islands in the Java Sea, reached by speedboat from Ancol or Muara Angke in one to two hours. The nearer ones — Pramuka, Tidung, Pari — have homestays and are cheap and busy with domestic visitors; the further ones, including Macan and Sepa, have small resorts and better water. Snorkelling is decent rather than spectacular, and there are turtle breeding programmes on Pramuka. It is the closest real beach escape to the city.
Bogor and Puncak
Bogor, an hour south by KRL commuter train, holds the Kebun Raya botanic garden, founded by the Dutch in 1817 and one of the oldest and largest in the tropics — eighty-seven hectares of collections including a celebrated palm avenue and giant Amorphophallus. The presidential palace sits inside it with deer on the lawns. Beyond Bogor the road climbs to Puncak, a pass at around 1,500 metres through tea plantations, cool and green and completely jammed at weekends. Take the train to Bogor rather than driving.
Volcanoes and further
Tangkuban Perahu, near Bandung, is a volcanic crater you can drive to the rim of, three to four hours away and better as part of a Bandung trip. Bandung itself, the West Java capital at 768 metres, is two to three hours by train and is a genuinely good weekend: Dutch art deco architecture, Sundanese food, factory outlets and cool air. Anyer and Carita on the west coast are the nearest mainland beaches. Krakatoa is visible from that coast and reachable on a long organised trip.
Practicalities
Trains beat roads for Bogor and Bandung; KRL to Bogor is a few thousand rupiah and an hour, and the Argo Parahyangan to Bandung is comfortable and cheap. For the islands, book a speedboat from Ancol rather than the slow public boat from Muara Angke unless budget is the point. Avoid the southern road corridor at weekends entirely — Puncak has a one-way traffic-flow system precisely because it seizes up. And leave before six for anything by road.
