Nightlife and Live Music in Jakarta

Jakarta has the biggest and most varied nightlife in Indonesia by a wide margin, and it operates on a scale and at a level of polish that surprises visitors who have only seen Bali. The scene splits geographically: SCBD and Sudirman for the expensive clubs and rooftop bars, Kemang for the expatriate and creative crowd, Senopati and Gunawarman for cocktails and restaurants, and Blok M for the older, cheaper, louder end. Alcohol is expensive by Indonesian standards but cheaper than Singapore.
The districts
SCBD — the Sudirman Central Business District — holds the large clubs, rooftop bars and the highest prices, with a dress code and a queue at weekends. Senopati and Gunawarman, just south, are the restaurant-and-cocktail strip and where the better bar programmes are. Kemang, further south again, is the long-established expatriate and creative district with live music, casual bars and a more relaxed feel. Blok M has a long history as a nightlife area and is the cheapest and least polished. Menteng has hotel bars and jazz.
Live music and jazz
Jakarta's jazz scene is genuinely serious. Java Jazz Festival, held annually since 2005, is among the largest jazz festivals in the world by attendance, bringing several hundred international and Indonesian acts to the convention centre over three days in a format that mixes headline names with local players. Beyond it, Motion Blue and a circuit of hotel and club venues run jazz through the year. The indie and rock scene plays smaller rooms in Kemang and the south, and large international tours use the stadium and arena venues.
What it costs
A local beer is 45,000–90,000 rupiah in a bar, a cocktail 130,000–250,000, and the SCBD clubs run bottle service at Singapore prices. Imported spirits carry heavy excise. Cover charges are common at the larger clubs at weekends and often include a drink. The rooftop bars along Sudirman and in SCBD charge a premium for the view and are worth doing once at blue hour, when the skyline is at its best. Kemang and Blok M are half the price for a similar evening.
Practicalities
Clubs run until three or four at weekends and Jakarta is a genuinely late city, unlike the rest of Indonesia. Dress codes at SCBD venues are enforced. Use Grab or Gojek rather than driving — enforcement is real and the traffic is worse at two in the morning than you expect. Ramadan changes hours substantially and many venues close or stop serving alcohol. And Indonesia's drug laws are among the harshest in the world, with long sentences and the death penalty on the books for trafficking; there is no tolerance whatsoever.
