Perfect 2 Day Itinerary in Jakarta
Part of the Jakarta travel guide — see every topic in All Jakarta Guides.
Two days is the right length for Jakarta on most Indonesia itineraries, and the organising constraint is not distance but traffic. The city is enormous and a cross-town car journey at peak can take an hour and a half, so the workable plan is to spend each day in one geographic cluster: the north for the old city, and the central corridor for the museums and the modern city. The MRT covers the second cluster; the KRL commuter train covers the first.
Day 1: the north
KRL commuter train to Jakarta Kota, arriving at the 1929 art deco terminus. Fatahillah Square before the heat and the crowds, then the Jakarta History Museum in the 1710 Stadhuis and the Wayang Museum. Coffee at Cafe Batavia. Walk south into Glodok for the Petak Sembilan market, Gang Gloria's food alley and Jin De Yuan temple — and eat lunch there. Afternoon: Sunda Kelapa harbour to see the wooden pinisi schooners loading, or the Maritime Museum. Back before the evening traffic.
Day 2: the centre
Start at the National Museum when it opens — give it two hours, it deserves more. Cross Merdeka Square to Monas for the observation deck, then the Istiqlal Mosque and, opposite it, the cathedral. Lunch in Menteng, then walk the garden-suburb streets, Taman Suropati and the Jalan Surabaya flea market. Late afternoon: the MRT south to Senayan or SCBD, a mall food hall for regional Indonesian food, and a rooftop bar at blue hour when the skyline lights up.
If you are here on a Sunday
Rearrange everything. Car-Free Day closes the Sudirman–Thamrin corridor to traffic from around six until eleven, and tens of thousands of people fill the main road — running, cycling, exercising, eating from stalls, with the skyline either side. It is the best free thing in the city and it is over by lunchtime. Do that first, then Menteng and the National Museum, and push the old city to the other day.
With more time
A third day gets you Taman Mini for a pavilion from every province in Indonesia, or the Thousand Islands for a beach, or Bogor's 1817 botanic garden by train. A fourth justifies Bandung, two to three hours away by rail, for art deco architecture, Sundanese food and cool air. If you are transiting rather than visiting, one day covering Kota Tua and Glodok in the morning and the National Museum in the afternoon is a defensible compression.
