Founded in March 2003 as one of northern Vietnam’s first private hospitals, Hong Ngoc’s original site at 55 Yen Ninh sits between Truc Bach Lake and the southern edge of West Lake, about two kilometres from the Old Quarter. It is open 24/7, runs a 24-hour emergency service, and has since grown into a group with a second hospital and several clinics around the city.
What it is known for
Occupying the middle. Hong Ngoc opened in March 2003 as one of the first private hospitals in northern Vietnam and has grown into a small group — two hospitals and several clinics — while the original Yen Ninh site remains its general hospital, open 24 hours a day with a round-the-clock emergency service. A sixteen-storey building added inpatient capacity, and the hospital publishes a list of the insurers it works with, which is more than most Vietnamese private hospitals do. It is deliberately cheaper than the international hospitals and considerably calmer than the public ones.
Who it suits
Visitors staying around the Old Quarter, Truc Bach or the south of West Lake who need a doctor for something that is not an emergency but will not wait — a stomach infection, a fever that needs a blood test, a wound that needs cleaning and stitching properly. It suits travellers who want private-hospital comfort without international-hospital prices, and it is close enough to the tourist centre to reach in ten minutes. For major trauma or anything complex, Viet Duc and the international hospitals are the better call.
Cost and insurance
Middle tier: several times a public hospital, well below Hanoi French Hospital or Vinmec. Two practical points from the hospital’s own site. It publishes the insurers it has arrangements with, so it is worth checking whether yours is listed before you go — if it is not, expect pay-and-claim. And administrative hours run from 06:30 to 17:00, with a 20% surcharge on services provided outside them, so an evening or weekend visit costs more than the same visit on a weekday morning.

At 55 Yen Ninh in Ba Dinh, on the strip of land between Truc Bach Lake and the southern end of West Lake, about two kilometres north-west of Hoan Kiem Lake and ten minutes by car from most Old Quarter hotels.
