A foreign-invested hospital on Phuong Mai Street in Dong Da, open since 1997 and still the best-known international hospital in northern Vietnam. It runs accident and emergency, intensive care, cardiology, infectious diseases and tropical medicine, paediatrics and a full set of surgical specialties, and it publishes its website in English, French, Japanese and Vietnamese.
What it is known for
Being first, and staying the reference point. Hanoi French Hospital opened in 1997 as the first international hospital in Hanoi and northern Vietnam, and it still treats the largest share of the city’s foreign residents and visitors. Its specialties run from accident and emergency, anaesthesiology and intensive care through cardiology, gastroenterology and hepatology, infectious diseases and tropical medicine to paediatrics and neonatal care. An expansion begun in 2016 took it from 68 to around 170 inpatient beds, a seven-floor inpatient block opened in 2019 and a new outpatient and emergency building in 2022. It was among the first medical institutions in Vietnam to adopt the ISO 9001 quality standard, in 2007.
Who it suits
Any traveller with insurance, anyone who wants to be examined and have the result explained in English, French or Japanese, and anyone whose problem is serious enough that being understood matters more than the bill. Families use it for children; long-stay residents use it for everything. It is also the hospital most likely to write the English-language medical report an insurer or an airline will ask for. It is not the place to go with no money and no policy: the public hospitals are a fraction of the price.
Cost and insurance
This is the top of Vietnam’s three tiers, and priced accordingly — a consultation and basic tests here cost many times the same visit at a public hospital. The hospital deals with travel insurers routinely and can bill some of them directly, but only where a guarantee of payment has been arranged in advance; everyone else pays on the day or leaves a deposit on admission. Phone the assistance number on your policy before you go if there is time. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure, and keep the itemised receipt and discharge summary.
Getting there
On Phuong Mai Street in Dong Da, just off Giai Phong Road and roughly four kilometres south of Hoan Kiem Lake — fifteen to twenty minutes by car from the Old Quarter outside rush hour, considerably more inside it. Grab and Xanh SM both come here, and the hospital sits immediately beside Bach Mai Hospital, which is the landmark every driver in the city knows.
