Warin Chamrap is the town on the south bank of the Mun River, and it is where the trains from Bangkok terminate. Its hospital was upgraded from a community hospital to a general hospital in 2015 and now has around 298 beds, an emergency department and the four main specialties. For anyone staying near the station, it is closer than anything in the city.
What it is known for
Being the other side of the river. Warin Chamrap is a town in its own right on the south bank of the Mun, and it holds Ubon Ratchathani’s railway station, which is where the overnight trains from Bangkok stop. The hospital grew from a ten-bed clinic in the 1980s to a community hospital and then, in 2015, to a general hospital; it is registered at around 298 beds, which makes it one of the largest district-level hospitals in the north-east. Physicians, surgeons, paediatricians and obstetricians are all on staff, and there are operating theatres and intensive-care beds.
Who it suits
Anyone staying in Warin Chamrap, near the railway station or out towards the university, who does not want to cross the bridge into the city. It suits budget travellers and long-stay residents on Thai social security for the same reasons the other public hospital does: real care at a price you can pay. It is Thai-first, so expect queues and forms in Thai. Anything beyond its scope is referred over the river to Sunpasitthiprasong, which is fifteen minutes away.
Cost and insurance
Public pricing, the same as Sunpasitthiprasong — a consultation with basic tests and medicine typically costs less than a night in a mid-range hotel. Pay at the cashier in cash or by card; direct billing by a foreign insurer is not something to expect at a Thai public hospital, so plan on paying and claiming later. Ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate before you leave, and keep the discharge summary if you are admitted — your insurer will want both.
Getting there
On Si Sa Ket Road in Kham Nam Saep, a couple of kilometres west of Ubon Ratchathani railway station and about four kilometres south-west of Thung Si Mueang, over the Mun River bridge. Songthaews run between Warin and the city all day; a tuk-tuk or taxi takes ten or fifteen minutes from the centre. The switchboard is +66 45 424 250.
