If you have insurance, start here. Ubonrak Thonburi opened in 1995 on a fifteen-rai site just east of the centre and is now part of the Thonburi Healthcare Group, with around 100 beds, a 24-hour emergency department and specialist centres for heart, brain and nervous system, cancer, orthopaedics, mother and child, eyes, ear-nose-and-throat and dialysis. It draws patients from across the lower north-east and from over the Lao border.
What it is known for
Being the serious private option in a province that only has three. Ubonrak Thonburi opened in 1995, sits on a fifteen-rai site a few streets east of the old centre and belongs to the Thonburi Healthcare Group, which runs more than twenty hospitals nationally. It has a 24-hour emergency department, an intensive-care unit and a cardiac catheterisation laboratory that the hospital says is staffed around the clock — unusual this far from Bangkok. It holds Thai HA accreditation and, since December 2024, accreditation from the American Accreditation Commission International, with clinical excellence certification covering acute stroke care, gastrointestinal endoscopy and maternal and child health.
Who it suits
Anyone with travel insurance, anyone who wants to be seen quickly rather than queue, and anyone who would rather explain a symptom in English than in Thai. It is the obvious first stop for chest pain or a suspected stroke, because of the catheterisation laboratory and the stroke certification. Families use it for children; long-stay residents use it for check-ups and surgery. Genuinely major trauma, and anything needing the specialties only a regional hospital keeps, still goes to Sunpasitthiprasong.
Cost and insurance
Private pricing, several times what the public hospitals charge for the same outpatient visit — but well below the international hospitals in Bangkok or Phuket. A deposit on admission is normal. Cashless direct billing depends entirely on whether your insurer has a contract with the hospital, so ring your assistance line before you go if the situation allows; for everyone else it is pay-and-claim. Ask for the written estimate before treatment starts, and keep the itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate for the claim.
Getting there
On Burapha Nai Road, about a kilometre and a half east of Thung Si Mueang and easy to reach from anywhere in the city; the entrance is on the main road with parking in front, so a car can pull straight up.
