Rom Klao is the smallest of the city’s three private hospitals and the most central: about 50 beds on Upparat Road, a few minutes from Thung Si Mueang and the night market. It is a neighbourhood hospital rather than a specialist one, and it is where many people in the old town go for everyday medicine.
What it is known for
Being close, and being cheap for a private hospital. Rom Klao sits on Upparat Road in the middle of the old town, a few minutes from Thung Si Mueang and the streets of guesthouses around it, which makes it the handiest hospital in the city for anyone staying there. The National Health Security Office registers it as a medium-sized general hospital of around 50 beds, which is a fair description: outpatient clinics, an emergency room, an inpatient ward, and none of the specialist centres the two larger private hospitals advertise. Its full Thai name begins with the word for private, which is why signs and directories render it several different ways.
Who it suits
Travellers staying in the old town with a minor illness or injury — a stomach bug, an infected cut, a fever, a scooter graze — who want a private hospital without the price of one and without crossing town. It suits residents who need a doctor without a production. It is not the place for a serious injury or anything complicated: those cases are stabilised and sent on to Sunpasitthiprasong or Ubonrak Thonburi, both a short drive away.
Cost and insurance
The most affordable private option in the city, and closer to the public hospitals in price than to the big private ones. Settle at the desk in cash or by card. Direct billing by a foreign insurer is unlikely at a hospital this size, so plan on paying and claiming; ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate before you leave, since a small hospital will not necessarily produce them unprompted. Ask for an estimate before agreeing to anything more than a consultation.
Getting there
On Upparat Road, the north-south street through the old centre, a few minutes on foot or by tuk-tuk from Thung Si Mueang and the night market beside it.
