The province’s main public hospital and, in practice, the only hospital in Sukhothai town. About 320 beds on Charot Withi Thong Road, the highway running west out of the new town towards the Historical Park, with the full set of general departments and an accident and emergency unit. Prices are Thai public-hospital prices; the trade-offs are queues, Thai-language paperwork and a transfer to Phitsanulok for anything a provincial hospital cannot handle.
What it is known for
Being the hospital in Sukhothai. This is the Ministry of Public Health’s general hospital for the province, opened in 1963 and now running around 320 beds, and it carries the load for the whole of Mueang Sukhothai district: the road accidents, the births, the long admissions and the public-health work no private clinic touches. Every general department is here, along with an accident and emergency unit. It is a general hospital rather than a regional centre, and that is the distinction which actually matters to a visitor — complex trauma, neurosurgery and the higher specialties are referred an hour east to Phitsanulok rather than treated here.
Who it suits
Anyone in Sukhothai town who is ill or hurt, and particularly anyone without insurance: this is real care at a price a backpacker can pay, and it is the closest proper hospital to the new town, the bus terminal and the guesthouse strip. It is not the place for a quick English-language consultation. Queues in the outpatient clinics are long, forms are in Thai, and English is limited to a few doctors and to the emergency room, which is faster. Bring a Thai-speaking friend, or let your guesthouse phone ahead for you, if you possibly can.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices. Foreigners are charged more than Thai citizens but still a small fraction of any private bill, and a consultation with basic tests and medicine typically costs less than a night in a mid-range guesthouse. Payment is at the cashier before you leave, in cash or by card. Insurers essentially never direct-bill a Thai public hospital, so expect to pay and claim afterwards: bring your passport, and ask for an itemised receipt and a medical certificate in English before you go. Both are routine requests, and both are much easier to obtain on the day than by email a fortnight later.
Getting there
On Charot Withi Thong Road — Highway 12 — about two and a half kilometres west of the new-town centre and roughly ten minutes from the bus terminal, on the same road that carries on another ten kilometres to the Historical Park. Songthaews heading out to the old city pass it, and any hotel in the new town will call a car. The switchboard is +66 55 611 333. Tell the driver “rong phayaban Sukhothai”; there is only one hospital of that name, so there is nothing to confuse it with.
Details checked against the hospital’s own website, September 2026. Call before a non-urgent visit; in an emergency call 1669 or the hospital’s own emergency line above. Travel information, not medical advice.
