The biggest hospital for a long way in any direction, and the one the smaller hospitals in Sukhothai and across the lower north refer their difficult cases to. Around 940 beds on Srithamtripidok Road in central Phitsanulok, a few minutes’ walk from the railway station, with tertiary-level cover across the specialties and a clinical teaching centre attached to the Faculty of Medicine at Naresuan University.

What it is known for

Being the top of the public referral chain for this part of Thailand. Buddhachinaraj was founded in 1940 and designated a regional hospital in 1982; with around 940 beds it treats at tertiary level across the specialties, which is precisely what the general and community hospitals of Sukhothai province cannot do. It has also been a teaching hospital since 1994, when the first joint clinical medical education centre of the Faculty of Medicine at Naresuan University was established here. When a serious case is transferred out of Sukhothai, this is usually where it goes.

Who it suits

Anyone with a serious illness or injury and no insurance, and anyone whose case has outgrown a smaller hospital. If you need a neurosurgeon, a cardiologist or an intensive-care bed and cannot fund a private admission, this is the hospital in the region that has them. In exchange you accept a very busy public hospital: long outpatient queues, crowded corridors, Thai-language paperwork and limited English outside the emergency department. Anyone who simply wants a doctor to look at a cut or a fever will be seen faster and more comfortably elsewhere.

Cost and insurance

Public pricing, which for a foreigner paying cash still undercuts the private hospitals across town by a wide margin, even for surgery and an inpatient stay. Settle at the cashier; foreign insurers do not direct-bill here, so plan on paying and claiming. Bring your passport and, if you have one, a letter or referral from the hospital that sent you. Ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate before discharge — a hospital this size handles the request routinely, but only if you make it while you are still on the ward.

Getting there

On Srithamtripidok Road in the middle of Phitsanulok, on the east bank of the Nan River and less than a kilometre south of the railway station — walkable if you are well, a two-minute taxi if you are not. From Sukhothai it is about an hour on Highway 12. The switchboard is +66 55 270 300. Tell the driver “rong phayaban Phutthachinnarat”; it is the largest hospital in the city and there is no chance of a driver in Phitsanulok not knowing it.
