A 120-bed Ministry of Public Health community hospital in Sawankhalok town, about forty minutes north of Sukhothai. It matters to visitors for two reasons that have nothing to do with its size: it is the closest hospital to the Si Satchanalai ruins, and it is the closest hospital to Sukhothai Airport, which despite the name sits in Sawankhalok district. Anything beyond a community hospital’s range is sent on to Sukhothai or Phitsanulok.
What it is known for
Position, more than size. Sawankhalok is a community hospital — the smallest tier of the Thai public system that still has wards, an operating theatre and an accident and emergency unit — and it was approved for 120 beds in 1994. What makes it worth a traveller’s attention is the map: it is the nearest hospital to the Si Satchanalai ruins, the quieter of the two World Heritage parks, and the nearest hospital to Sukhothai Airport, which sits in this district rather than in Sukhothai. Both are places visitors reach long before they think about hospitals.
Who it suits
Anyone taken ill or hurt at Si Satchanalai, on the road north, or at the airport, and anyone staying in Sawankhalok itself. It is the right first stop for a fall off a bicycle, heat exhaustion or a wound that needs cleaning and stitching, and it can stabilise and refer anything larger. It is not somewhere to expect English: this is a district hospital serving a Thai market town, forms are in Thai and interpreting is whoever is on shift. For a planned consultation, or anything complicated, carry on to Sukhothai or Phitsanulok.
Cost and insurance
The cheapest care in this guide. Community-hospital charges are modest even by Thai standards, and a foreigner paying cash for a dressing, an X-ray and medicine will pay a fraction of a private outpatient bill in Phitsanulok. Pay at the cashier; there is no direct billing to a foreign insurer, so it is pay-and-claim. Bring your passport. Ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate before you leave — a small hospital may need a little time to produce one, which is another reason to ask on the day rather than later.

In Sawankhalok town, roughly forty minutes north of Sukhothai by road and about half an hour from the Si Satchanalai Historical Park — considerably closer to those ruins than any hospital in Sukhothai.
