Saint Mary’s is the middle option in Korat: a private general hospital that is run as a not-for-profit, open every day around the clock, with an emergency ambulance service and the ordinary range of outpatient clinics. It costs a good deal less than the Bangkok Hospital and is far quicker than the public hospital for anything routine.
What it is known for
Being the hospital that people in Korat have used for generations for everyday medicine. It is a private general hospital run on a not-for-profit basis, open every day around the clock, with outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, an emergency department and its own ambulance service reached on the switchboard number, extension 1234. It is not a specialist referral centre and does not pretend to be: the work is general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics and the illnesses and injuries an ordinary week produces. Anything beyond that is referred to Maharat or to Bangkok Hospital Ratchasima.
Who it suits
Travellers who want a private hospital for a fever, a stomach infection, a scooter graze or a sprain, and who would rather not spend a morning in a public outpatient queue. It suits residents on modest budgets for the same reason. It is not the place for major trauma or complex surgery, and English is not guaranteed at every desk, so it helps to have a Thai speaker or a translation app to hand for anything more involved than a straightforward consultation.
Cost and insurance
Mid-range private prices — noticeably below Bangkok Hospital Ratchasima, above the public hospitals. Outpatient visits are settled at the cashier on the day, in cash or by card, so carry a card that works abroad. Direct billing depends entirely on whether your insurer holds a contract, so assume pay-and-claim unless the desk tells you otherwise, and expect a deposit on admission. Ask for the itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate before you leave; the hospital produces them on request and your insurer will want both.
Getting there
On the Mittraphap-Nong Khai Road — the Nong Khai-bound continuation of Highway 2 — north of the city centre, on the main road with its own forecourt, so a car can pull up at the door. It is a few minutes by Grab, taxi or songthaew from central Korat and from the bus terminals.
