If something goes wrong at Khao Yai, this is where you will most likely end up. Pak Chong Nana is the Ministry of Public Health’s general hospital for the district, with 303 beds, a 24-hour emergency room and every ordinary department, sitting on the Mittraphap Road in the middle of Pak Chong town. It is public, so it is inexpensive, busy and Thai-speaking.
What it is known for
Being the hospital for the whole of Pak Chong district, which includes Khao Yai National Park, the vineyards and resorts along the Thanarat Road and a long, busy stretch of Highway 2. At 303 beds it is a general hospital rather than a small community one, with a 24-hour emergency room, inpatient wards, surgery, obstetrics and outpatient clinics. In practice that makes it the receiving hospital for road casualties on the highway and for anyone hurt up in the park, and the place the 1669 ambulance will take you unless you insist otherwise.
Who it suits
Anyone in the Khao Yai area who needs an emergency room, and anyone without insurance who needs treatment they can afford. Being a public hospital, it is inexpensive and thorough but slow: outpatient queues form early, wards are full, and almost all the paperwork is in Thai. If your Thai is limited, bring someone who speaks it, or a resort staff member. For a minor complaint with insurance, the private hospital a short way along the same road will be much faster.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices, which is the main reason to choose it. A consultation with basic tests and medicine costs a small fraction of the private equivalent, and an admission remains affordable even for a traveller paying cash. Payment is at the cashier before you leave. Do not expect an insurer to bill the hospital directly; pay and claim instead, and ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate at the same time — requesting them later, from another country, is much harder than asking at the desk.
Getting there
On the Mittraphap Road in the middle of Pak Chong, the town everyone passes through on the way to Khao Yai; the hospital is on the main road, so any driver will find it. From the park’s visitor centre allow the better part of an hour down the winding Thanarat Road; from Korat it is about eighty-five kilometres east along the highway.
