Almost everyone calls it Bangkok Hospital Korat. It sits on the Mittraphap Road in the city, is part of the Bangkok Dusit Medical Services group that runs Bangkok Hospital, and offers what that implies: private rooms, specialist clinics, an emergency department open around the clock, an ambulance service and staff who deal with foreign insurers every week.
What it is known for
Being the BDMS hospital for the whole north-east corner of the country, and the one an insurer is most likely to name. It is open around the clock, runs its own ambulances, and carries the specialist clinics a private hospital of this group is built around: heart, orthopaedics, women’s and children’s health, surgery, imaging and health screening. The hospital lists interpreters in a dozen languages, which no other hospital in the province does. Cases beyond its scope go to the group’s Bangkok hospitals, three hours down the Mittraphap Road, and the transfer is something it arranges routinely rather than improvises.
Who it suits
Anyone with travel insurance, anyone who wants to be seen quickly and in English, and anyone facing surgery or a complicated diagnosis who would rather not queue at the public hospital. It is also the sensible choice for residents and long-stay visitors who want continuity: the same doctor, records that follow you, appointments that hold. If money is the binding constraint and the problem is not urgent, Saint Mary’s or the public hospital will cost a great deal less.
Cost and insurance
The most expensive hospital in the province, priced much as a Bangkok private hospital is. Cashless direct billing is available to insurers the hospital holds a contract with; everyone else pays up front or leaves a deposit on admission, so telephone your insurer’s assistance line before you go if the situation allows it. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure and read it. Keep every receipt and the discharge summary — a claim will be refused without them, and both are simple to ask for at the cashier.
Getting there
On the Mittraphap Road in Nai Mueang, on the through-route that every taxi, songthaew and long-distance bus in Korat uses, with parking and a covered drop-off at the front.
