Srisangwan is the Ministry of Public Health’s general hospital for Mae Hong Son province, on Singhanat Bamrung Road in the middle of the provincial town. At around 154 beds it is several times the size of the three district hospitals on the loop, and it is where they send what they cannot handle. It is still a small hospital by Thai standards, and the most complex cases go on again to Chiang Mai.
What it is known for
Being the top of the referral chain in a province that has no private hospital at all. Srisangwan is the general hospital for Mae Hong Son, with around 154 beds, the main departments, an operating theatre and the province’s intensive-care capacity, and it takes the road-accident cases, the difficult births and the long admissions from Pai, Khun Yuam, Mae Sariang and the smaller district hospitals beyond them. Its catchment is enormous and thinly spread — a horseshoe of mountain road several hours long from end to end — which shapes everything about it: it is busier than its size suggests, and it is the last stop before Chiang Mai.
Who it suits
Anyone in the province with a serious illness or injury, and anyone staying in or near Mae Hong Son town for anything at all. Travellers without insurance will find it inexpensive by any Western measure. It is not a place to expect a quick consultation in fluent English: it is a Thai government hospital in a remote province, the forms are in Thai, the queues in the outpatient clinics are long and English is limited to a few doctors and the emergency room. Bring your passport, and a Thai-speaking friend if you have one.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices. Foreigners pay more than Thai citizens and still very little compared with a private hospital in Chiang Mai: a consultation with tests and medicine is typically a few hundred baht, and an admission remains affordable. Settle at the cashier in cash or by card. Insurers do not direct-bill a hospital like this, so treat it as pay-and-claim and ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate before you leave. If you are likely to be transferred on to Chiang Mai, call your insurer first so it can name the hospital it will pay for.
Getting there
On Singhanat Bamrung Road in the centre of Mae Hong Son town, a few minutes from Chong Kham lake and from the airport, so any songthaew, taxi or hotel can put you at the door. From Pai it is a long drive west and then south on Route 1095, well over three hours in normal conditions and longer in rain or fog; from Khun Yuam it is about an hour and a half north on Highway 108. In an emergency call 1669 rather than driving yourself, and give the operator a landmark or a pinned location.
