The Ministry of Public Health’s community hospital for Pai district, on Chaisongkhram Road a few minutes from the walking street. It is small, it is cheap, and because Pai is where the hired scooters are it deals with a steady stream of road injuries as well as the everyday medicine of the district. Anything major is stabilised here and driven on to Mae Hong Son town or Chiang Mai.
What it is known for
Scooter injuries, in volume. Pai is a small town at the end of the most photographed mountain road in Thailand, most visitors hire a bike the day they arrive, and this is the hospital that sees what follows: gravel rash, exhaust burns on the calf, broken collarbones and wrists, and the occasional serious crash on the descent into town. It is a community hospital and works like one — outpatient clinics, an emergency room, an inpatient ward and an ambulance — and it is the only hospital of any kind in the district, so it is also where the residents of a wide stretch of mountain country come for everything else.
Who it suits
Anyone in Pai with an injury or an illness that does not obviously need a bigger hospital, and everyone without insurance. For a cut that needs stitching, a dressing changed, a burn, a fever or a stomach bug it is close, quick by the standards of Thai public hospitals and very cheap. What it is not is a trauma centre or a surgical hospital: a serious head injury, a complicated fracture or anything needing an operating theatre is stabilised and referred. English is limited, so bring a translation app and your passport.
Cost and insurance
Thai public prices, which for a foreigner paying cash are still low: a consultation with dressings and medicine usually costs less than a night in a Pai guesthouse. Pay at the cashier before you leave. Direct billing is not something to expect at a community hospital, so plan on paying and claiming, and ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate at the time — getting them afterwards from abroad is far harder. If you came off a rented scooter, bring the rental agreement and your licence: the compulsory motor insurance only pays out for a licensed rider.
Getting there
On Chaisongkhram Road, the main road through Pai, a short ride from the walking street and the bus station — close enough that most guesthouses will simply point you there or run you over. Any songthaew or motorbike taxi in town knows it. In an emergency call the hospital or 1669 rather than moving an injured person yourself. Serious cases go on from here by ambulance: Mae Hong Son town is more than three hours west and south on Route 1095, and Chiang Mai three to four hours the other way.
