Khun Yuam is a small town on Highway 108 roughly midway between Mae Hong Son and Mae Sariang, and its hospital is the only one on that stretch of the loop. It has been the district hospital since 1979 and was rebuilt to 30 beds in the late 1990s. It is a first-aid and everyday-medicine hospital: enough to stabilise a crash and start treatment, not enough for anything major.
What it is known for
Being the only hospital for a long way in either direction. Khun Yuam sits on Highway 108 between the provincial town and Mae Sariang, and its hospital — a health station from 1965, a district hospital since 1979, rebuilt to 30 beds in 1998 — covers a mountainous district with very few people in it. It runs outpatient clinics, dentistry, a pharmacy, a laboratory, a radiology service and an emergency room, which is a reasonable spread for its size. What it does not have is the theatre and specialist capacity for a major case, and it does not pretend otherwise: those are stabilised and moved.
Who it suits
Anyone hurt or taken ill on the middle stretch of the loop road, and anyone staying in Khun Yuam itself. If you come off a bike an hour from anywhere on Highway 108, this is where the ambulance will take you first, and getting a wound cleaned and a fracture splinted here before the long drive north or south is worth a great deal. It is a small Thai government hospital, so expect Thai paperwork and very little English; carry your passport and a translation app.
Cost and insurance
Among the cheapest care you will find anywhere, at Thai public rates: a consultation, dressings and medicine come to a small fraction of a private bill. Settle at the cashier in cash or by card before you leave. Nobody direct-bills a hospital this size, so it is pay-and-claim, and the receipt and an English-language medical certificate are worth asking for while you are standing there. If the hospital moves you on to Mae Hong Son town or Chiang Mai, ask what the transfer itself will cost before you agree to it.
Getting there
On Krit Suwan Road in Khun Yuam, a few hundred metres off Highway 108, which is the loop road itself — the town is small enough that the hospital is easy to find and anyone will point you at it. It is roughly an hour and a half south of Mae Hong Son town and about three hours north of Mae Sariang. In an emergency on the highway call 1669 and give a kilometre marker or a pinned location; road names mean little out here and the nearest crew may be some distance away.
Details checked against the hospital’s own website, September 2026. Call before a non-urgent visit; in an emergency call 1669 or the hospital’s own emergency line above. Travel information, not medical advice.
