Mae Sariang sits where the loop road turns east for Chiang Mai, and its hospital is the biggest thing on that half of the circuit: a Ministry of Public Health community hospital rated a step above the province’s smaller district hospitals, with the wards and theatre capacity to deal with more than a first-aid case. Anything beyond it goes north to Mae Hong Son town or east to Chiang Mai.
What it is known for
Covering the empty half of the loop. Mae Sariang is the town at the southern corner of the circuit, where Highway 108 turns east for Hot and Chiang Mai, and its hospital serves a large, mountainous, thinly populated district along the Myanmar border. The Ministry of Public Health rates it a level above the province’s smallest district hospitals, which in practice means more wards, more departments and more that can be dealt with on the spot rather than driven for hours. For anyone travelling the southern leg it is by a long way the most capable hospital between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son town.
Who it suits
Travellers riding or driving the southern half of the loop, anyone staying in Mae Sariang, and anyone hurt on Highway 108 between Hot and Khun Yuam. It handles road injuries, everyday illness and the ordinary work of a district hospital at Thai public prices. It is a Thai government hospital in a remote town, so expect Thai paperwork, limited English and a queue in the outpatient clinics; the emergency room moves faster. Anything requiring a specialist goes on to the provincial hospital or to Chiang Mai.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital pricing: low by any Western standard, and lower still than a private hospital in Chiang Mai for the same treatment. Payment is at the cashier before you leave, in cash or by card. Insurers do not direct-bill hospitals like this one, so budget to pay and claim afterwards, and ask at the desk for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate. If you were riding a rented motorbike, bring the rental agreement and your licence, because the compulsory motor insurance attached to the bike only covers a rider licensed to be on it.
Getting there
On Wiang Mai Road in Mae Sariang town, just off Highway 108 — the hospital is signposted from the highway and any songthaew or motorbike taxi in town will know it. Mae Sariang is roughly four hours from Chiang Mai heading west through Hot, and about three hours south of Mae Hong Son town with Khun Yuam in between. In an emergency on the highway call 1669 and give a kilometre marker or a pinned location rather than a road name; the crews cover long distances here.
