Songkhla Hospital is the Ministry of Public Health’s general hospital for the provincial capital, 30 km north-east of Hat Yai: 508 beds on the Songkhla-Ranot road (Highway 408) in Phawong, on the way into town, with a full set of departments and a medical education centre that trains doctors. If you are based at Samila Beach or in Songkhla’s old town it is fifteen minutes away, against forty or more to anything in Hat Yai.

It moved to a purpose-built campus on Highway 408 at Phawong, on the southern approach to town, in the mid-1990s; the old site in the town centre now runs as a community health centre. Who it suits
Anyone staying in Songkhla town or at Samila Beach who falls ill or is hurt: it is a quarter of an hour away, where the Hat Yai hospitals are forty minutes or more, and for an emergency that difference matters. It is a Thai public hospital in every respect — cheap, busy, forms in Thai, English limited to a few doctors — so for a minor complaint an insured traveller may prefer to make the drive to a private hospital in Hat Yai. Uninsured visitors get competent treatment at the lowest prices in the province.
Cost and insurance
Public prices, with the usual higher tariff for foreigners that is still a fraction of a private bill. Pay at the cashier in cash or by card; no foreign insurer will direct-bill here, so keep every receipt and ask for an itemised bill and an English medical certificate before you leave, which is a routine request even if it takes a little while. Carry your passport. The hospital also runs paid after-hours specialist clinics for those who want a shorter wait, advertised locally in Thai; ask at the information desk if you are not an emergency.

On the Songkhla-Ranot road, Highway 408, in Phawong sub-district about 7 km south-west of Songkhla’s old town and 8 km from Samila Beach — roughly fifteen minutes by car from either. From Hat Yai it is about 30 km and forty minutes by taxi or Grab along Highway 407, longer at rush hour; the Hat Yai–Songkhla minibuses pass close by. Say “rong phayaban Songkhla”.
