The Ministry of Public Health’s regional hospital for Songkhla and the lower south: about 700 beds (640 in use), every major department and a large emergency service, on Ratthakan Road about 1.5 km north of the railway station. It has treated the city since 1959 and carries the Thai HA quality mark. Public prices, and the queues that come with them.
What it is known for
Being the workhorse. Hat Yai Hospital is the Ministry of Public Health’s regional hospital for Songkhla and the surrounding provinces, a 700-bed centre that opened to patients in June 1959 and has since been rebuilt around a six-storey inpatient block and a five-storey outpatient building. It takes the road-accident cases, the difficult births and the long admissions that private hospitals do not, and it is the hospital most Thai workers in the city are registered with under social security, so it is always busy. Its neonatal intensive care unit has a strong reputation in the south. Cases beyond it are referred a few kilometres east to Songklanagarind.
Who it suits
Travellers without insurance who need real care at the lowest price in the city, anyone hurt in the northern half of the centre who needs the closest emergency room, and long-stay residents who hold Thai social security. It is not the place for a quick English-language consultation: the outpatient halls are crowded, forms are in Thai and English is limited to the emergency room and a few doctors. Malay is more useful here than in most Thai cities, but do not count on it. If you have insurance and time, one of the private hospitals will be faster and easier.
Cost and insurance
The cheapest hospital in Hat Yai. Foreigners pay a higher tariff than Thai citizens, but a consultation, tests and medicine still cost less than a night in a mid-range hotel, and even an admission is affordable. Payment is at the cashier before you leave, in cash or by card; direct billing by a foreign insurer is not something to expect, so keep every receipt and ask for an itemised bill and an English-language medical certificate for the claim. Bring your passport. The hospital’s own site gives separate mobile numbers for appointments; the switchboard is the number to use for anything else.
Getting there
On Ratthakan Road about 1.5 km north of Hat Yai Junction railway station and a kilometre north of Kim Yong market, near the fresh market — ten minutes on foot from the northern end of the Niphat Uthit roads, five by motorbike taxi or tuk-tuk.
