Say “rong phayaban Overbrook”. On Singhaklai Road at the north edge of the old town, about 500 metres north of the clock tower and a block short of the Kok River.

Founded in 1903 by an American physician and still run by a foundation rather than a hospital chain, Overbrook is the private hospital of the old town: 246 beds, an accident and emergency centre, the usual clinics and specialists, and a long habit of treating foreigners — older residents still call it rong ya farang, the foreigners’ hospital. It sits on Singhaklai Road near the Kok River, five minutes’ walk north of the clock tower.

What it is known for

History and location. Overbrook opened in 1903, decades before any other hospital in the province, and its name comes from the American donors who paid for it rather than, as most people assume, from its position by the river. Today it is a 246-bed private general hospital owned by a foundation, with an accident and emergency centre, a heart centre, endoscopy, CT angiography, a rehabilitation unit and the full run of outpatient clinics, plus after-hours specialist sessions in the evening. A redevelopment master plan announced in 2026 aims to make it the referral hospital for the Golden Triangle. It is the hospital most old-town hotels will point you to.

Who it suits

Visitors staying in the old town who want to be seen quickly, in some English, for something that does not need a major hospital — stomach bugs, infections, scooter scrapes, a bad fall on the night-bazaar steps — and long-stay residents who use it for routine care. It is also a sensible first stop for a moderate injury when you are close by: the accident centre can stabilise and refer, and Prachanukroh is a fifteen-minute walk away for anything it cannot handle. Complex surgery and serious trauma, with insurance, are better taken directly to Bangkok Hospital Chiang Rai.

Cost and insurance

Mid-range private prices — well below Bangkok Hospital Chiang Rai, several times the public tariff at Prachanukroh. Some Thai insurers have direct-billing arrangements; foreign travel insurers usually do not, so expect to pay and claim, and ask for the estimate first. A deposit is asked for on admission. English is spoken at the desk, and the hospital will produce a medical certificate for your insurer on request, though it may take a day. Keep the itemised receipt and the discharge summary; both are needed for a claim.

Getting there

Singhaklai Road runs east–west along the northern edge of the old town, a block short of the Kok River; the hospital is at number 17, roughly 500 metres north of the clock tower and a kilometre north-west of Bus Terminal 1 — an easy walk from most central hotels, or two minutes by tuk-tuk or Grab.
