What it is known for
Being the one hospital in the province built to the standard of the Bangkok private hospitals. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Rai is the BDMS group’s 47th hospital, opened with 80 beds, and it runs a private emergency and trauma centre open around the clock: board-certified emergency physicians on duty 24 hours, in-house orthopaedic, surgical, medical and paediatric doctors available at all hours, a nine-bed emergency ward with a dedicated resuscitation room, and its own 24-hour ambulance service. Outpatient clinics run from 8 am to 8 pm daily. The International Medical Service provides interpreters and case coordinators, and serious cases can be moved down the BDMS network to Chiang Mai or Bangkok.
Who it suits
Anyone with travel insurance, anyone with a serious illness or injury, and anyone who wants to be treated in their own language without waiting. It is the natural choice after a bad road accident on the Mae Sai or Chiang Saen roads — the hospital is the first big one you reach coming back towards the city — and the place families and long-stay residents use for anything complicated. It is also where Overbrook and Kasemrad Sriburin send the insured cases they cannot handle. For a minor complaint it works too, but you will pay a premium for the surroundings.
Cost and insurance
The most expensive hospital in the province, and priced like the BDMS flagships in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Cashless direct billing is available to insurers the group has a contract with — a long list — but only for treatment the insurer has guaranteed, so ring your policy’s assistance line before you go if the situation allows; otherwise you pay up front or leave a deposit on admission. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure, and keep every receipt and the discharge summary — both are needed for a claim.
Getting there
On Phahonyothin Road (Highway 1) in Nang Lae, about ten kilometres north of the clock tower and beyond the airport turning, on the road to Mae Chan and Mae Sai: fifteen to twenty minutes by Grab or taxi from the centre, longer in the evening rush. Northbound songthaews and buses along the highway pass the entrance. In an emergency call the hospital’s own ambulance on +66 52 051 913 (or 1719 from a Thai phone) rather than driving. Say “rong phayaban Krungthep Chiang Rai”; every driver knows it.
