Mae Sai is Thailand’s northernmost town, sixty kilometres up Highway 1 from Chiang Rai, and its Ministry of Public Health district hospital is the one you will be taken to if something goes wrong at the border, on the Doi Tung loop or on the road along the Mekong to the Golden Triangle. It is a community hospital, not a big one — it stabilises and refers to Chiang Rai — but it sees more than five hundred outpatients a day and is used to patients from across the border.
What it is known for
Being the hospital at the border. Mae Sai Hospital is the Ministry of Public Health’s district hospital for Mae Sai, on the Phahonyothin highway a kilometre and a half south of the bridge to Tachileik. It is a community hospital of the ordinary Thai kind — an emergency room, general wards and a busy outpatient hall that handles five to six hundred people a day, a good share of them from across the border — and for anything beyond its scope it stabilises the patient and sends them down the highway to Chiang Rai, an hour away. The Kasemrad group also has a small private branch hospital in Mae Sai.
Who it suits
Anyone hurt or taken ill at the border, on the Doi Tung and Mae Salong loops or on the Mekong road towards Chiang Saen, for whom it is simply the nearest emergency room; budget travellers with a minor problem who are staying in Mae Sai overnight; and drivers and riders who need a wound cleaned and dressed before the run back to the city. Service is in Thai, with limited English, and the forms are in Thai. For anything serious, with insurance, the sensible move once you are stable is to go on to Bangkok Hospital Chiang Rai, the first big hospital on the highway south, about fifty kilometres away.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices, and among the lowest on this list: a consultation, basic tests and medicine typically cost a few hundred baht, an overnight stay not a great deal more. Foreigners pay a higher tariff than Thai citizens. Pay at the cashier in cash or by card; insurers will not direct-bill a district hospital, so keep every receipt and ask for a medical certificate, which may be written in Thai unless you ask for English. Bring your passport — this is a border town and it will be asked for.
Getting there
On Phahonyothin Road, the highway that runs straight through Mae Sai to the border, about 1.5 kilometres south of the bridge and the immigration post: five minutes by tuk-tuk or songthaew from the market by the bridge, or a twenty-minute walk. Coming from Chiang Rai it is on the highway as you enter town, before the bridge. Say “rong phayaban Mae Sai”. From Sop Ruak and the Golden Triangle viewpoint it is about forty minutes west along the Mekong road, and the district hospital in Chiang Saen town is nearer.
