If you have insurance, or the problem is anything more than minor, this is where most visitors should go: a private general hospital on Rojana Road, ten minutes east of the island by tuk-tuk, run by a company listed on the Thai stock exchange. Its emergency centre and ambulances work around the clock, and it has heart, orthopaedic, keyhole-surgery, women’s and children’s centres that no other private hospital in the province matches.
What it is known for
Being the private hospital Ayutthaya sends its own people to. Founded in 1990 by a group of doctors from Bangkok’s Siriraj medical school, Rajthanee has grown into the largest private hospital in the province — roughly 250 of the 353 beds its group runs across two sites — with an emergency centre that is open 24 hours and staffed with general, brain and orthopaedic surgeons, a heart centre, a minimally invasive surgery centre, a children’s centre that is also open day and night, dialysis and a cancer clinic. It holds Thai Hospital Accreditation rather than JCI, and it runs its own ambulances for short and long-distance transfers.
Who it suits
Travellers with insurance, anyone whose illness or injury is more than a pharmacy or a quick consultation can handle, and anyone who wants to be seen without the queues of the public hospital. Families use its children’s centre; the expatriates working at the province’s industrial estates use it for everything. English is spoken, though the hospital does not advertise interpreters, so bring a translation app and your policy documents. For a life-threatening case it is the obvious private choice in the city, and it is also the hospital that will stabilise you and put you in one of its own ambulances to Bangkok if that is what is needed.
Cost and insurance
Provincial private prices — a good deal below Bangkok’s international hospitals, several times the public hospital across the river. The hospital publishes a list of the insurers it works with and will arrange a guarantee of payment for an admission where a contract exists; anyone else pays a deposit and claims afterwards, so call your insurer’s assistance line before you go if there is time. Outpatient visits are settled at the cashier the same day. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure, and for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate on the way out.
Getting there
On Rojana Road, the main road east out of the city, about three kilometres east of the railway station across the Pa Sak river from the island, near the Ayutthaya City Park shopping mall. Ten to fifteen minutes by tuk-tuk or Grab from the guesthouses around Naresuan Road; any driver knows it. Rojana Road is busy at the factory shift changes in the early morning and late afternoon, so allow for it.
