A mid-sized private hospital opened in 2013 and owned since 2014 by Bangkok Chain Hospital, the listed group behind the Kasemrad hospitals. It sits on the Asia Highway at Khlong Chik, about four kilometres from Bang Pa-in Palace and twenty from the old city, which makes it the closest private hospital to the palace, to the Bang Pa-in industrial estates and to the highway most people arrive on from Bangkok. Its own website was still a placeholder when we checked, so the detail here comes from its parent group.
What it is known for
Being where the highway is. Karunvej Hospital Ayutthaya opened in 2013 and has been part of Bangkok Chain Hospital — the group that runs the Kasemrad and World Medical hospitals — since early 2014. It has 105 registered beds, an accident and emergency department, an intensive care unit and the usual run of clinics for a chain hospital of its size, according to its parent group. Its catchment is the southern half of the province: the Bang Pa-in and Hi-Tech industrial estates, the towns along the Asia Highway and Highway 1, and the visitors who come up from Bangkok to Bang Pa-in Palace, four kilometres away. It is the only private hospital between the palace and the city.
Who it suits
Visitors to Bang Pa-in Palace, anyone staying at the southern end of the province or working at the industrial estates, and drivers hurt on the Asia Highway or Highway 1 between Bangkok and Ayutthaya, for whom it is the nearest private emergency department. It is a middle-market chain hospital: cheaper and closer than the Bangkok hospitals, smaller than Rajthanee in the city. For a minor problem it is perfectly adequate; for anything complex when you are on the island itself, Rajthanee is nearer and better equipped, and Bangkok’s hospitals are only an hour further down the same road.
Cost and insurance
Chain-hospital private prices, in the same band as Rajthanee. The BCH group has direct-billing contracts with many Thai and some international insurers, but check by phone before assuming yours is one of them; otherwise it is a deposit on admission and pay-and-claim for outpatient care. Carry a card that works abroad, keep every receipt and ask for the English medical certificate before you leave. Because the hospital’s own website was unfinished when this page was written, ring ahead if you are planning rather than in an emergency, and confirm the current switchboard number while you are at it.
Getting there
On the Asia Highway at kilometre 56 in Khlong Chik, Bang Pa-in district — about four kilometres from Bang Pa-in Palace, twenty kilometres south of the island and roughly an hour from the northern edge of Bangkok. From the old city take Highway 347 or the Asia Highway south, twenty to thirty minutes by Grab or taxi; from the palace it is a short ride. Tell a driver “rong phayaban Karunwet Bang Pa-in”. In an emergency call 1669, and the public ambulance will decide between here and the provincial hospital; the hospital has an accident and emergency department of its own for anyone who arrives by car.
