The big public hospital for the whole province: a Ministry of Public Health regional hospital with around 520 registered beds — more than 600 in day-to-day use — every major department, a teaching role for Bangkok medical schools and an emergency department that takes the province’s serious cases. It is also the only hospital on the island itself. Prices are public-hospital prices; the trade-off is queues, crowded wards and paperwork mostly in Thai.
What it is known for
Size, reach and location. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital is the Ministry of Public Health’s regional hospital for the province and beyond — the one that takes the serious road-accident cases from the highways, the complicated births and the long admissions, and trains medical students for Bangkok’s medical faculties. It lists about 520 registered beds and reports more than 600 in day-to-day use, which makes it by far the largest hospital in Ayutthaya. Every major department is here, and as a regional hospital its emergency department takes cases around the clock. It also happens to be the only hospital on the island, a few hundred metres from the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum.
Who it suits
Travellers without insurance who need real care at a price they can pay, anyone seriously hurt in the old city or on the western side of the river for whom it is the nearest big hospital, and Thai-speaking visitors. It is not the place for a quick English-language consultation: outpatient queues start early and run long, forms are in Thai, and English is limited to some doctors and the emergency department. If you have insurance and the time to travel ten minutes, the private hospital on Rojana Road is the easier experience; if you are bleeding on U-Thong Road, this is where to go.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices. Foreigners pay a higher tariff than Thai citizens but still a fraction of any private bill: a consultation, basic tests and medicine typically cost less than a night in a mid-range guesthouse, and even an admission is affordable. Pay at the cashier in cash or by card before you leave. Insurers almost never direct-bill a Thai public hospital, so expect to pay and claim, and ask for an itemised receipt and a medical certificate in English — both are routine requests, but you have to make them, and it is easier with a Thai speaker beside you. Bring your passport.
Getting there
On U-Thong Road, the ring road around the island, at its southern edge in the Pratu Chai quarter — a few hundred metres south of Ayutthaya Rajabhat University and the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, about 1.5 km south-west of Wat Mahathat and ten minutes from the railway station by tuk-tuk. Tell the driver “rong phayaban Ayutthaya” and everyone knows it. In an emergency call 1669: the public ambulance service will bring you here or to whichever hospital is appropriate. Grab cars work in the city, but for an injury the ambulance is the better call.
