Waterfalls & the Botanic Garden in Phong Nha
A visual guide from the Phong Nha travel guide — see all posters in Visual Guides.
Phong Nha isn't only subterranean. The Botanic Garden — a forested reserve on the park loop — hides trails down to Gio Waterfall and its swimmable pools, while nearby Nước Moọc spring pushes an entire river out of the ground into impossibly turquoise channels laced with boardwalks. Together they make the perfect low-effort nature day between caves — bring swimwear and grippy footwear.
The Botanic Garden & Gio Waterfall
The garden's loop trails take an unhurried hour or two through tall forest, past a small lake and enclosures used for rescued wildlife, before dropping steeply to Gio Waterfall — the final descent is rocky and slick, so wear real shoes. The reward is a jungle plunge pool with hardly anyone in it; even in high season the garden stays far quieter than the show caves.
Mooc Spring Eco Trail
At Nuoc Mooc, boardwalks and bamboo bridges thread across channels where cold water wells straight up from the karst — its underground source still hasn't been fully traced. There are swimming platforms, kayaks and picnic huts; the water is at its clearest, bluest best in the dry months. Flood season can shut the whole site and the boardwalks turn slippery, so check conditions locally in autumn.
