Phong Nha's tourism story started on a farm: the original Phong Nha Farmstay, opened around 2010 by an Australian-Vietnamese couple above the rice paddies, put the town on the backpacker map. Today farmstays, homestays and riverside villas dot the plain — buffalo in the fields, karst towers on the horizon — and the slow countryside between caves is half the reason people stay longer than planned.
The Bong Lai Valley
Rent a bicycle or scooter and follow dirt lanes into the Bong Lai valley, the countryside circuit east of town: feed the flock at the famous Duck Stop, meet the resident water buffalo, swim in the river, and pre-order the peanut-sauce barbecue chicken at the gloriously named Pub With Cold Beer — it's cooked from scratch, so order before you're hungry. Tracks get muddy after rain; ride gently.
Choosing a Base
Staying rural means paddy-edge sunrises, family kitchens and genuine quiet, with the town's pier, cafés and tour desks only a short ride away. Options run from simple homestays to farm hotels with pools and, at the top end, heritage-style villas on the riverbank. Most lend bicycles and arrange caving tours and bus connections; in the February–August dry season the best-known places fill up, so book ahead.
