National Park Loop by Motorbike in Phong Nha

The Phong Nha-Ke Bang loop — roughly 65 km on the west branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway and wartime Route 20 — may be the easiest great motorbike day in Vietnam: smooth, nearly empty tarmac rolling through double-canopy jungle, limestone walls and river valleys, with cave stops strung along it like beads. Ride it slowly; the road itself is the attraction.
Stops Along the Loop
The classic clockwise run: the turquoise boardwalks of Nuoc Mooc spring, Paradise Cave's stair climb, a swim at the Tra Ang stream, then the sobering Eight Ladies' Cave memorial on Route 20 — a shrine to eight young volunteers entombed when bombing sealed the cave in 1972. Add Dark Cave near the loop's end if you have energy left. Viewpoints are mostly unmarked; when the karst opens up, just pull over.
Riding Notes
Every guesthouse in town rents scooters, and the loop's gradients are gentle enough for automatics; fill the tank first, as fuel inside the park is scarce. Start early — you'll beat both the tour buses and the wet-season afternoon downpours — carry water, download offline maps, and respect the jungle stretches: phone signal comes and goes. Not a rider?
