Orchid Island (Lanyu) in Taitung and Green Island

Part of the Taitung and Green Island travel guide — see every topic in All Taitung and Green Island Guides.

Orchid Island, called Lanyu in Taiwan, is a green volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean, southeast of Taitung. It covers about 45 square kilometres, with steep mountains, tropical forest and a rocky coast. Most of the roughly 5,000 people who live here are Tao, an Indigenous people with a deep ocean culture. The island feels far away and very different from the rest of Taiwan. Visit slowly, and with respect.

The Tao people and the sea

The Tao, also known as the Yami, have lived on Orchid Island for many centuries. Their language is related to languages in the islands to the south, and their life has long been tied to the sea. Fishing, farming taro and building boats are central to their culture. Most Tao live in six villages around the coast. Today many families mix old ways with modern life. When you visit, remember that these villages are homes, not a museum. Learn a little before you go, and buy food, crafts and tours from local people when you can.

Tatala boats and traditional homes

The Tao are famous for their tatala boats. These are wooden boats made from planks fitted together by hand, then painted red, white and black with bright patterns, including eye-like circles on the bow. You will see them pulled up on the beaches near the villages. Please do not touch, sit in or climb on the boats. They have deep meaning and some are sacred to their owners. In some villages, such as Ivalino, you can also see traditional homes built partly below the ground, which protect families from strong typhoon winds. Ask before you take photos of homes or people.

The flying fish season

Flying fish are at the heart of the Tao year. The main flying fish season runs from about February to June, when the fish come with the warm current. During this time, the community holds ceremonies and follows many traditional rules about fishing, cooking and sharing. Visitors may see fish drying on racks in front of houses. Do not touch the fish or the drying racks, and keep a respectful distance from any ceremony unless you are invited. Some local guesthouses and restaurants serve flying fish dishes, which is a good way to learn more.

Exploring the island

A ring road of about 40 kilometres runs around the island. Most visitors rent a scooter near the harbour or airport, and you need a valid motorcycle licence and international permit. The coast has dramatic volcanic rocks, sea arches and small bays for swimming and snorkelling when the sea is calm. A cross-island road climbs into the hills. A hiking trail leads to a crater lake in the forest, best with a local guide. Bring enough cash, because card payment is limited and the island has few ATMs.

Ferry and flight season

Ferries to Orchid Island leave from Fugang harbour near Taitung and take about two to three hours. In summer, there are also boats from Houbihu in Kenting. Sailings are most regular from about April to October. In winter, the sea is often rough and many boats stop or are cancelled. The crossing can be bumpy at any time, so take seasickness medicine if you need it. Small planes fly from Taitung airport in about 25 to 30 minutes, but seats are few and flights are often cancelled in strong wind. Plan extra days, and book early.
