Taitung and Green Island
Taitung is a small, relaxed city on the southeast coast of Taiwan, between high green mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It is a good base for some of the most beautiful nature in the country. North of the city, the East Rift Valley runs between two mountain ranges, with rice fields, tea farms and quiet villages. In Chishang you can cycle on flat paths through the paddies, and at Luye the hot-air balloons rise over the valley in summer. Hot springs are close by at Zhiben. Out at sea are two islands. Green Island has coral reefs, easy snorkelling and a rare hot spring of seawater by the shore. Orchid Island, further south, is home to the Tao people and their ocean culture. Taitung is slower and less crowded than western Taiwan. Plan extra time, because trains, flights and boats here all depend on the weather.
